Bryson DeChambeau cruised to victory at THE NORTHERN TRUST at Ridgewood Country Club on Sunday. With a final round 69, DeChambeau took out the tournament by 4 shots over Tony Finau. Australian Cameron Smith was tied for third which was one of his best finishes in a PGA Tour event this year.
The win gave DeChambeau 2000 Fed Ex Cup points and he takes over the lead from Dustin Johnson. Not only did he pick up a cool $1.62 million for his victory but the win also puts him one step closer the $10 million Fed Ex Cup.
“That's great. I'm super stoked to be No. 1 right now and see what next week and the weeks after hold,” DeChambeau said. “That's the goal of everybody that's playing out here right now is we all want to be in the top 5, so if you win, you're locked.
Known for his guts and determination, DeChambeau will be going all out as he tries to secure a spot on the Ryder Cup team as well. The top eight players on the US players automatically make the team but he currently sits 9th on the qualifying points list. For him to make the team at the moment captain Jim Furyk will have to use a pick but Tiger Woods and Phil Mickleson are out of the guarantee
d spots so he knows he will still have to go all out.
“Pedal to the metal for me. I don't try and back off when I win,” he said.
“Everybody is unique in their own way and some people work harder for longer hours than others. You can say what I do is crazy, but at the end of the day, I'm the one with the trophy this week.”
There is no question what the selection will mean for DeChambeau as back in 2016 at Hazeltine he paid for his way to the tournament as a fan.
