We have a new world number 1 in golf and his name is Brooks Koepka. Koepka was elevated to the top spot after winning the CJ Cup in South Korea by 4 shots over Gary Woodland. The overall purse was $9.5 million, with Koepka earning $1,710,000 USD which is the most prize money of any tour event outside the majors and World Golf. In fact all players that played in the tournament walked away with a cheque with the last place man winning $15 295 USD.
Koepka was his dominate self heading into the final round. He shot an 8 under 64 for a total 21 under and never really gave anyone in a field a chance.
Ryan Palmer who finished in 3rd made a bit of a charge on the back nine with 6 consecutive birdies and finished with a 10 under 62. In second was Woodland who shot a 9 under 63 but also had 2 bogeys in his round. Both were no match for Koepka in the end who finished with an eagle on 18th to secure his 3rd win in 11 starts.
"To be world No.1 is something I dreamed of as a kid," Koepka said on the 18th green of the Nine Bridges Club on Jeju Island in South Korea.
"I don't think this one's going to sink in.""For me, I just need to keep winning," he said. "I feel like I need to win a few more regular Tour events and then keep adding majors. I feel like my game's set up for that.
"I've got so much confidence off winning those majors where - it's incredible - every time I tee it up, I feel like I really have a good chance to win, whether I have my A-game or not. It's something I'm so excited [about] right now, you have no idea. I just can't wait to go play again."
Jason Day also had a good finish to the tournament shooting a closing 67 to finish the tied for 5th.
