Justin Thomas comes from behind to win The Players 2021.
In one of the “best rounds of his life” Thomas got off to a slow start with a bogey on the 8th but got his round going and plays his next 4 holes 5 under with an eagle on the 11th.
"I fought so hard today," Thomas said. "It's probably one of the best rounds of my life tee-to-green. I've seen some crazy stuff happen on TV in the past, and I'm glad to be on this side of it."
With one of his best ball striking performances, Thomas was one shot back from overnight leaders Lee Westwood and Bryson DeChambeau, who for the second week running were paired in the last group duelling it out.
But it was Thomas who decided to crash the party to claim a one shot victory over Westwood.
Westwood had a chance to win after his birdie on the 14th and claimed a share of the lead with a when Thomas bogeyed the same hole. It was the 16th and 17th hole which really swung the tournament when Thomas birdied the par 5 16th and Westwood bogeyed the island green par 3 17th.
With a 2 shot lead heading into the last Thomas narrowly kept his drive on the 18th on the fairway with water hugging up the left side, hits the green in regulation and walks off with a 2 putt par.
Thomas becomes only the fourth player to win a major, THE PLAYERS Championship, the FedExCup and a World Golf Championships, and it couldn't have come at a better time.
“It’s a lot harder [to win] than when there weren’t fans here, that’s for sure,” he said. “I’m sure happy to be back, and I’m so happy to be a Players Champion.”
After his round he also reflected back at his relationship with Tiger Woods:
"If you told us when we were 15, 20 years old that Tiger Woods is texting us the night before we have a chance to win a tournament trying to inspire us, it's pretty cool."
“Part of me wishes he was here so I could rub it in his face a little bit more.”
“I fought so hard today, I stayed really patient,” Thomas told Golf Channel immediately after the round.
