Martin Laird wins the Shriners Hospital for Children Open in a playoff over Matthew Wolff and Austin Cook. It took 3 chances but it was third time lucky for Laird.
Laird started the day tied in the lead with Patrick Cantlay but as Cantlay was slipping down the leader board, Laird was increasing his lead on the field.
Cantlay made 2 quick bogeys in his first 2 holes and never recovered after that. He added another two bogeys on the 5th and 6th hole and was out of contention for the tournament. Meanwhile Laird was solid and made pars on his first 5 holes, then went to birdie his next two holes, dropped a shot of the 8th hole and with the ball plugged in the green side bunker on the 9th, he holes out for eagle.
He looked like he was in control and Laird had a chance to win in regulation. He headed into the last hole of the tournament with a one shot lead but a bogey sent him into a 3 man playoff with Wolff and Cook.
All three made par on the first playoff hole and it wasn’t until the second playoff hole where Laird drained his birdie putt to claim victory.
