Australian Minjee Lee won the 2022 US Women's Open at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
Opening rounds of 67, 66 & 67 left her in a great position going into the final round, sitting at 13-under-par, four shots clear of her nearest competitor. Lee opened her Sunday round with back to back birdies on the opening two holes, while bogey's at holes 5 and 7 made it slighlty less comfortable than expected. Minjee once again showed her class however, with a series of clutch par saves mid-round as well as a birdies on 12 and 15 which breifly expanded her lead to 6 shots.
Bogey's on 16 and 18 were no issues for the Australian as she came home to claim victory by a margin of four shots over American Mina Harigae with a final round score of 71, even par. Scoring proved very tough at Pine Needles on Sunday, with only two players shooting under par.
This victory is Minjee's second major, after her win at the Evian Masters just last year. As well as the impressive silverware, Lee will take home $1.8 Million USD in prize money, the most ever for a women's golf event. Adding to the historic weeked, Lee became just third Australian to win the US Women's Open, joining Karie Webb and Jan Stephenson.
Lee dedicated this win to her work in the gym recently, saying "I picked up a little bit of length over the past off-season, so it has been helpful for me","Just slowly learned how to hit it a little bit faster and faster, as I was the last couple years, as well. Just seems to be coming together a bit more this year."
