Patrick Cantlay comes from 3 behind overnight leader Justin Thomas to win the Zozo Championship at Sherwood Country Club.
In a stunning upset Cantlay makes 9 birdies in his final round and two bogeys to beat Thomas and Jon Rahm by one stroke shooting 7 under 65 on Sunday. Rahm had a chance on 18th to tie Cantley at 23 under but his birdie putt missed right giving Cantley his third PGA Tour victory.
Both Cantlay and Thomas started the day strongly; making birdies on the first two holes of their round while Rahm birdied his 2nd and 3rd hole. Rahm started the day only one behind Thomas and was playing in the last pairing of the day.
While Cantley continued to catch the leaders, Thomas and Rahm were joint leaders after nine holes while Cantley was only 2 behind the co-leaders heading into the turn.
By the 11th hole, Rahm had taken the solo lead from Thomas who was now one behind and Cantley still in striking distance at 2 behind.
It was from here on in that things got interesting.
On the 12th, Rahm made bogey and was once again tied in the lead with Thomas which meant that Cantley was only one back from the lead now. Rahm again made bogey on the 13th while Cantley went on a hot streak and birdied his next 3 holes to open up a 3 shot lead over Thomas who made bogey on his 15th hole.
A slip from Cantley on his 16th hole when he made bogey and left the door open for the other two to jump back into the tournament but heading into their last hole Thomas was two behind and Rahm was only one. When Rahm’s birdie putt missed to the right it secured the tournament for Cantley in a remarkable come from behind victory over the world number 2 and 3 golfers in the world.
