Cam Smith holds of world number one Jon Rahm to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
Playing in the final group together on Sunday, Smith and Rahm battled it out the whole day trading birdies as each was trying to secure their first win of 2022.
With Collin Morikawa breathing down Rahm neck for the world number one position, Rahm was impressive all tournament with 3 rounds of 66 and a course equalling 61 on Saturday to shoot 33 under.
Morikawa who was tied for 5th was trying to do his best to chase down the leaders and try to sneak into the number one position.
As it was an invite-only field, the scores were low and Smith had to shoot a combined total of 34 under to win the tournament by one shot.
Another Australia Matt Jones was in the mix but ran out of holes to chase down the leaders. Jones shot a 7 under 30 on the back nine to put himself into contention with 2 eagles on the 13th and 15th hole. In the end, he was outright third and picked up a very handy cheque for the 2022 season.
“It was intense,” Smith said of the final round showdown after he and Rahm started the day level.
“Jon and I both played well all day we had Matty in the group in front lighting it up. Unreal round and something I’ll never forget for sure.
“... it’s just where my golf game’s at at the moment. I feel like I had a really good rest. I didn’t play much in the fall and I actually did some work on my swing and it came out."
