Rory McIlroy captures his 20th PGA Tour career title with a win at The CJ Cup

Playing with overnight leader, Ricki Fowler, McIlroy started the day 2 shots behind the leader but got to work earlier with his putter which had abandoned the superstar in recent times.

He birdied 2 of the first 3 holes before dropping one on the 4th. He then birdied his 6th and 8th hole to go out in a 33.

Fowler responded to McIlroy’s hot start with two birdies of his own on his 1st and 4th hole. He gave that back on the 6th with a double bogey but managed to birdie his 9th hole and they were tied.

Collin Morikawa the eventual runner to McIlroy was the real threat to the winner. He birdied 7 of his nine holes going out in a 29.

Turning the corner, both McIlroy and Fowler had a one shot lead over Morikawa.

Fowler bogeyed his 10th hole which left McIlroy in the lead by himself and after that it was a 2 man race.

Morikawa birdied his 11th hole to tie for the lead and McIlroy responded with his own birdie on his 12th and reinstated the one shot lead. McIlroy extended his lead to 3 shots when he eagled his 14th hole by holing out on the front edge of the green.

He had a comfortable 3 shot lead with 4 holes to play but when Morikawa eagled his final hole it made things interesting. It meant that McIlroy had to be mistake free coming into his final stretch and when it was still all tied on his final hole, Morikawa was watching him come on from the clubhouse.

“It is a big carrot,” McIlroy said of the 20 wins. “I didn't know it would be this week.”

This was a huge victory for McIlroy who failed to perform at the Ryder Cup 3 weeks ago. He managed to only score 1 point for the Europeans and was bitterly disappointing for them.

“It was huge. It really was. I was really disappointed with how I played. I get more emotional thinking about that than even thinking about this. But yeah, there was a lot of reflection the last couple weeks.
“This is what I need to do. I need to play golf. I need to simplify it. I need to just be me. I think for the last few months I was maybe trying to be someone else to try to get better. I sort of realized that being me is enough, and being me I can do things like this.”
