Sam Burns wins the Charles Schwab in a playoff at Colonial Country Club
Sam Burns holds off one of the hottest golfers in the world, Scottie Scheffler, to win his third PGA Tour title for the year.
Burns started the 7 shots back from overnight leader Scheffler and got to work early to chase him down. Burns started the day with two opening birdies and continued the hot run with an outward 5 under 30.
As conditions toughened in the afternoon, Burns came home with an even 35 and thought he was out of the picture for the victory.
He finished 2 hours before the last group and he watched 16 players ahead of him navigate the winds and the quacking greens.
In the end, it was only Scheffler who managed to score no birdies for the day and finish a tie with Burns at 9 under. Both men were headed into a playoff.
In the playoff, both men had lengthy birdie putts and while Burns hold his 38-foot curler, Scheffler just missed his handing the win to Burns.
“I’m pretty exhausted,” the new champion said in the equally new tartan jacket given to the winners at Colonial. “Mentally I was prepared to go as long as it took. I don't know if I could have done it physically. But mentally I was ready. When coach calls your name, you've got to be ready to play, and I think we did a really good job of being ready.”
“Who would have ever thought that you’d have a chance seven back?” Burns said.
