Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay win the Zurich Classic
After taking the lead on Thursday with an opening 59 in best ball, Schauffele and Cantlay went wire to wire to claim victory.
“We played really well, made a lot of putts today on a day that was a little tricky with the wind and didn’t birdie a lot of the same holes. When you do that in this format, that’s really the key.”
They backed it up on Friday in alternate shots with a 68 but then started the day slowly on Saturday which was best to the best ball format.
After the sluggish start, if you can call 4 bogeys on the front nine slow, the really turned it up and birdied 8 out of the last nine holes to take a controlling lead heading into the last day.
This was the best 54 hole performance since the format was changed in 2017 and a 5 shot lead didn’t guarantee them victory with the alternate format again.
They were only really challenged by Billy Horschel and Sam Burns who got the lead down to one with Schauffele and Cantlay making bogeys on their 9th and 10th hole on their Sunday round.
Things were restored when Schauffele and Cantlay birdied their 11th hole and even a closing bogey did not stop their win.
“It’s awesome, Schauffele said when it as all over. “I said it earlier this week, you know, if there’s any success I could share with someone, it’d be Pat. So I’m happy we could get it done.”
